Background of the Study

Telemedicine, particularly teleconsultations, is gaining increasing importance in healthcare settings due to its potential to improve patient access to care, reduce waiting times, and enhance the overall patient experience (Kalu & Yusuf, 2023). In Nigeria, the rise of telemedicine offers patients in remote areas, such as those served by the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Katsina State, the opportunity to receive consultations with healthcare providers without needing to travel long distances. In this regard, telemedicine nursing consultations, where nurses assist in patient education, follow-up care, and communication during virtual consultations, play an essential role in facilitating these services (Aminu & Lawal, 2024).

Research has shown that telemedicine consultations improve patient satisfaction by providing more convenient access to healthcare and reducing geographical barriers (Nwanze & Olamide, 2023). However, the impact of telemedicine nursing consultations specifically on patient satisfaction in Nigeria, particularly in Katsina State, remains underexplored. The quality of telemedicine consultations can significantly influence patient outcomes, and understanding the role of nursing consultations in this regard is key to improving healthcare delivery in rural and underserved communities.

This study seeks to evaluate the effect of telemedicine nursing consultations on patient satisfaction at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, and to explore how these consultations contribute to the overall healthcare experience for patients.

Statement of the Problem

Telemedicine has proven effective in improving patient access to care, but the specific contribution of telemedicine nursing consultations to patient satisfaction in Nigeria remains inadequately studied. In Katsina State, telemedicine consultations are becoming increasingly integrated into routine healthcare delivery, yet there is little empirical evidence to assess how these consultations influence patient satisfaction. Without this understanding, it is difficult to optimize the telemedicine experience for patients and improve healthcare delivery at FMC Katsina.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of telemedicine nursing consultations on patient satisfaction in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

  2. To identify the factors that influence patient satisfaction with telemedicine nursing consultations.

  3. To assess the role of telemedicine nursing consultations in improving patient access to healthcare services in Katsina State.

Research Questions

  1. How do telemedicine nursing consultations affect patient satisfaction in Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State?

  2. What factors influence patient satisfaction with telemedicine nursing consultations at FMC Katsina?

  3. How do telemedicine nursing consultations improve patient access to healthcare services in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Telemedicine nursing consultations significantly improve patient satisfaction at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

  2. Factors such as communication, convenience, and accessibility significantly influence patient satisfaction with telemedicine nursing consultations.

  3. Telemedicine nursing consultations enhance patient access to healthcare services in Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on patients receiving telemedicine nursing consultations at FMC Katsina. Limitations include challenges in accurately measuring patient satisfaction through surveys, potential technological issues, and the regional differences in telemedicine acceptance.
